It’s Time for New Year: What Are Your Resolutions?

December 30, 2019

The New Year is about the transition from the old to the new, and stands before us like a fresh chapter in a book.

Our lives share a rhythm that is marked by the calendar. Towards the end of each year, we start reflecting on everything that it’s been, the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. How did we do? Have we pursued worthwhile goals? Can our relationships be better? No matter the answer to these questions, the New Year serves as a great reminder to start thinking about where we’re headed and how we’re living, to either turn things around or make things even better than before.

Now that both, the Western New Year and Tet (Lunar New Year) are coming up (January is so great, isn’t it?), have you had the chance to reflect on what you loved about the past year, all that you’ve accomplished, and where you are today? What will you write for the next chapter of your life? It’s really entirely up to you.

To help you come up with your resolutions, we went around and asked some of our DreamBuilders what they plan to do this New Year and Tet and what kind of resolutions they have for themselves. Set yours soon – and if round 1 doesn’t go as planned, you can redo them again during Tet.

Thao Tran | Member Experience

To Thao, Tet is all about family. As a member experience manager at Dreamplex, Thao spends a big chunk of her time at work, sharing it with the Dreamplex family. Now Thao is really looking forward to the holidays because she has planned a big reunion with everyone she loves at home. As per Vietnamese tradition, they will clean and decorate the house together, cook and share many meals together. Thao is also very excited to receive some lucky money this year and of course, pass the luck on to others as well.

Thao wants to ensure her resolutions are attainable this year. She wants to study and improve her English ability, and make more friends! To her, it is very important to learn as much as she can, especially about people and cultures. This is why she also plans to travel to Thailand and Singapore with her family.

Nhung Nguyen | Marketing

Nhung takes a much more reflective approach on New Year’s. To her, it’s all about “out with the old and in with the new.” When reflecting on her previous year, she thinks about what she needs to improve. Her wellbeing, her relationships, her habits… To her, nothing is perfect and she will constantly do better each year.

Of course, family is very important too. Nhung is from a very traditional family, hailing from Phan Thiet. She plans to head home during Tet and gather with her parents, siblings, and extended family. She is very excited for all the food the family will be making, especially her childhood favorites. Her daughter is looking forward for those too. While Tet brings together her whole family for a wonderful time, it is also a reminder to her that her parents are getting older and more fragile. It serves as a reminder for her to spend more time with them.

Piumi Rajapaksha | Experience

Piumi has fond memories of celebrating New Years in many different countries with her family. Since she’s been in Asia for the past 10 years, she’s lucky enough to celebrate both – the Western New Year and Tet. This gives her the opportunity to trial one set of resolutions and when they don’t work out (which is most of the time), re-do them.

This is the first year that Piumi lives far away from her family (as they are all scattered around the world), so her resolution for this year is to make more time to see them and have more reunions. Family has always been her number one priority in life. She also aims to strike a healthy balance between her personal and professional life and take better care of her health.

Rose Nguyen | Partnerships

Rose is very excited for New Year’s because she gets to put on a beautifully tailored ao dai. She plans to head back to Vung Tau to visit her family for all the Tet celebrations and spend some time on the beach. She loves the sun, the soft sand and the sound of waves, and every time she’s back home, she gets to experience what she loves, helping her relax and clear her mind.

As for her resolutions, she’s going to be more strict with herself. Health is her primary concern, so she will put more effort into exercising and eating healthy food, and especially staying away from carbs (her favorite). She also wants to push harder at work and be more productive. She loves what she’s doing and sees the effect her work has on people, so she would love nothing more than to help others achieve their own goals.

Dien Ho | Marketing

Tet is a very special time for Dien. His family is scattered all around Vietnam and during Tet is when everyone reunites in their hometown. He is very excited to see all the faces he grew up with. To him, it is really sad that they can all only meet up once a year, so their family makes their reunion extra special each year and ensures everything is positive without even a hint of negativity. He’s also really excited for all the food.

When asked about his resolutions, his was very simple. “My goal this year is to find a girlfriend, since my parents keep asking about it,” he says. “Kidding. Actually, my goal is to learn more about digital marketing and become a true digital specialist this coming year. I hope I can do it.”

Sally Vo | Member Experience

Sally is no different to the rest above – family is always number one. She will be visiting both hometowns of her parents and then together they plan to do a family trip somewhere. This is one of the rare times their whole family can get together and travel so she is making sure to take advantage of it.

When it comes to her plans for the upcoming year, she wants to improve her NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) knowledge and learn to be better at gratitude and mindfulness. Why these two specific things? “Together these two practices nurture the happier self within us,” Sally says. “We should all aim to be happy this year.”
